Armed groups: Competition and political violence

We show that the proliferation of armed groups increases amount organized political violence. The natural death a tribal leader provides quasi-experimental variation in number across districts Pakistan. Employing event study designs and IV-regressions allows us to isolate effect on violence from locational fundamentals conflict, e.g., local financing recruiting opportunities or government capacity. In line with idea compete for resources supporters, we estimate semi-elasticities an additional group ranging 50 60%. Introducing novel proxy counter-insurgency efforts enables this increase is driven by insurgency not state. Moreover, splitting-up compensate their capacity loss switching non-capital intensive attacks.
